Have you recently been arrested for a DUI? If so, you know that you will need to find auto coverage pretty quickly if you want to get back to driving. With all of the new fines and fees you will be facing, cheap DUI insurance can at least help offset some of the costs associated with your arrest.
Here are four more tips to help you lower your rates while you are facing this very expensive time.
Tip 1: Insure the Oldest Vehicle
If you have access to multiple vehicles, consider driving the older vehicle while you’re on probation for your DUI. Typically older cars are less expensive to insure. Plus, if you don’t have to insure a vehicle you are currently making payments on, that will allow you to lower coverage and further drop costs.
Keep in mind, this means you will only be able to drive the car you’re insured for. Most policies void drivers with DUI convictions so don’t think that the insurance coverage of your spouse or parents will be enough if you’re involved in an accident.
Tip 2: Lower Your Coverage
If you are able to insure a car that is fully paid off, you will be able to adjust your coverage as needed. While you probably don’t want to drop to the lowest coverage out there, lowering your coverage will obviously lower the cost of your insurance. When speaking with your insurance broker, let them know your budget so that they can seek the most coverage within those boundaries.
Tip 3: Shop Around
Don’t go directly to one company and stop there. With an insurance broker, you have a professional shopping the market for you. Let them investigate the affordability and availability of insurance. There are tons of insurance companies out there, many of which most of us are unaware. To find cheap DUI insurance you’ll want a pro looking at them all.
Tip 4: Don’t Repeat Your Mistake
This one’s obvious, but it’s not always followed. Over time, the cost of your insurance will improve—unless you become a repeat offender. According to NerdWallet.com “Alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal crashes were six times more likely to have a prior DUI conviction…” Don’t make the same mistake twice and, over time, your rates will lower.
