The San Andreas Fault Is “Locked, Loaded and Ready to Roll”

As a Southern California resident, you’re used to the earthquake jokes. Honestly, we trade off uncertainty for perfect weather and awesome cities. However, recent news surrounding our famous fault line has started to renew quake fears. Thomas Jordan, director of the Southern California Earthquake Center, described the San Andreas fault as “locked, loaded and ready to roll.” Last October, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) said something similar, announcing with a 99.9% certainty that the next quake would happen before April 2018.

So what exactly does this mean to all of us? You know, the people living in Southern California, near the fault line?

For one, it doesn’t exactly mean the “Big One” is happening tomorrow, but it also doesn’t mean it won’t. We seem to still be in the midst of the unknown. As Jordan explains, the San Andreas fault hasn’t gone off in a while. In fact, the last big quake occurred in the mid-1800s, so the fault is definitely overdue. Right now, we are just waiting for the “when” (and let’s hope JPL is wrong in their 2018 prediction).

And what can we do to prevent the next earthquake?

You didn’t actually think we’d have an answer for this, right? Prevention is impossible (although there might be some top secret government project going down that we don’t yet know about). What we can control is the level of devastation caused by an earthquake.

As a state, California has actually been pursuing this since the Northridge quake. Our highways have improved, structural regulations have increased and retrofitting of many earthquake-prone buildings has taken effect. And, on a personal level, if you’re living in Southern California without an earthquake kit in your closet and car, it’s time to get on it.

But how ELSE can we protect ourselves from that evil San Andreas fault?

I think you know where we are heading… Earthquake insurance! But this isn’t a suggestion because we happen to sell insurance, it’s a suggestion because Southern California residents will ALL be affected whenever the Big One finally DOES hit.

For most of us, buying a home is our biggest purchase. (And with the home prices in SoCal, you know that’s exactly true.) With an add-on like earthquake insurance, you can live with the certainty that your biggest asset is protected—even against the San Andreas fault.
