Do I Need Boat Insurance?

It’s officially June. And that means summer is just around the corner (guys, we’ve got less than a week left). For a quarter of you, summer is even your favorite season! (You must be dying from anticipation.) For many of us, summer gives us the chance to get our boats out of storage and finally into the water. But what will you need to do to prepare those bad boys for the waves?

So do I Need Boat Insurance?

There is only one way to answer this: Yes!

The legal need for boating insurance differs from state to state, but the law isn’t the only reason for insurance. According to data collected by the U.S. Coast Guard, there were over 4,000 accidents last year, resulting in over 2,500 injuries and 626 deaths. That adds up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages, medical costs and lawsuits.

But Seriously, Do I Need Boat Insurance?

While you may have the funds to replace your boat or be content with no longer owning one after an accident, not carrying insurance opens you up to the threat of a lawsuit. These lawsuits can stem from individuals seeking repayment over damages to their own boat or complete replacement of a boat if it’s destroyed, or from insurance companies seeking coverage for medical bills. Unless you’ve got a trust fund with money to burn, you’ll want to make sure you’re financially protected.

OK, So What Else Does Boat Insurance Cover?

Obviously, it protects against lawsuits. Boat insurance also can cover the cost of any damages to your boat (or another boat if you’re found to be at fault for the accident) and medical bills for you or others involved in a crash. Keep in mind, it all depends on the type and level of coverage you choose (and the type, size and other specifications of your boat).

And How Can I Save on Boat Insurance?

One way to save money: bundle your boat, renters or auto insurance together. You can also save by allowing a broker to shop the market or by completing a boater safety course.
